Pulitzer, Joseph
(1847-1911)
   American newspaper publisher, of Hungarian origin. Born in Mako, Hungary, of a Jewish father and a Roman Catholic mother, he studied in Budapest. At the age of 17 he went to the US. He served with Lincoln's Calvary. He became a reporter for the St Louis Westliche Post and was elected to the Missouri state legislature. In 1874 he purchased the St Louis Staats-Zeitung, in 1878 he bought the St Louis Dispatch and merged it with the St Louis Evening Post. In 1883 he purchased the New York World. Later he founded the New York Evening World.
